The end of the year brings an important Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) change and new Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) standards:
- An EPA rule mandating that hospitals run full loads in their ethylene oxide sterilizers goes into effect December 29. The EPA wants initial notification of compliance status for existing sterilizers by June 27, 2009.
- On January 1, 2009, The Joint Commission’s revised EC, life safety, and emergency management standards take effect, as does the accreditor’s new criticality scoring model.
Readers of Briefings on Hospital Safety have learned the full details about all of these developments in recent issues. Briefings is part of all Hospital Safety Center subscriptions.
