Hospital safety officers have long been familiar with required hazard surveillance rounds required by The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO). But a subtle change in 2009 makes it worth revisiting this provision.
EC.04.01.01will be the new home for surveillance round requirements. In 2009, The Joint Commission will not only call for building tours every six months in patient care areas, but also mandate efforts to catalog trends and track how well implemented activities work out, said consultant Teri Alameda, owner of Teri Alameda Health & Safety Consultation, Inc., in Portland, OR
By comparison, the current wording of old standard EC.1.20 leaves it to hospitals to figure out what to do with information discovered on the tours of patient areas.
