Employee sues under OSHA whistleblower law

Gregory Stewart, a former employee of H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa Bay, Florida, is suing the healthcare facility for wrongful termination after he reported an incident involving hazardous waste to OSHA, according to The Tampa Bay Tribune.
Stewart has filed a complaint with the Hillsborough County Clerk of the Circuit Court, saying he was forced to leave his position on the environmental services team in June after he reported an incident involving his manager, Tom Cayce. The whistleblower law protects employees from unfavorable personnel action after filing a complaint to OSHA.
In May, Cayce allegedly forced a woman to search through a bag of biologically-hazardous waste for his keys to "teach her a lesson," even though his keys were in his pocket, according to the court document. Stewart says he never saw the incident occur, but asked the woman about it after rumors circulated.
After being denied reinstatement in July, Stewart is asking for his job back as well as benefits and damages totaling more than $15,000.
