Compartmentation is one of the oldest forms of passive fire protection. Its basic concept involves the construction of vertical or horizontal barriers to contain the spread of fire and smoke in a facility.

The barriers must be continuous from outside wall to outside wall, from one barrier to another, or a combination thereof. The Life Safety Code® (LSC) details the use and requirements of fire barriers in healthcare facilities.
