A primer on criticality and other 2009 scoring nuances

The life safety standards will offer healthcare professionals plenty to digest when the standards take effect January 1, 2009. But along with them comes a series of scoring changes that promises to shift the landscape a bit more.

Currently, scoring for standards is based on the volume of citations and preestablished thresholds, according to The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO). As of January 1, scoring will instead center on a requirement’s criticality to the quality and safety of patient care. Accreditation decisions (e.g., full or conditional accreditation) will factor in criticality as well as the number of requirements for improvement (RFI).
