Medical helicopter crashes in Maryland
Emergency Management Alert, September 30, 2008
A medical helicopter crashed in a suburban Washington D.C. park in the early morning hours of September 28, killing four of the five people aboard, according to a report by the Associated Press (AP).
The helicopter was transporting two victims of a traffic accident when it crashed, killing the pilot, a flight paramedic, an emergency responder, and one of the victims. The crew reported bad weather late Saturday night and expressed the need to land at Andrews Air Force Base. The helicopter then disappeared from the radar and officials lost radio contact. Hours later, officials found wreckage in Walker Mill Regional Park.
Medical helicopters in the state are flown by Maryland State Police. Sunday’s accident was their first deadly crash since 1986, when a helicopter crashed in West Baltimore. However, the accident was the eighth fatal medical helicopter crash in the last 12 months nationwide, resulting in about 30 deaths, and prompting aviation officials to begin planning a public hearing, the AP reported.
