Echoing a theme coming from The Joint Commission, the keynote speaker at HCPro’s Environment of Care for 2009 seminar last week cautioned hospitals about placing too much faith in vendors during emergency responses.

Vendors are likely to help “the person who calls them first and has money,” said Joseph Cappiello, president and CEO of Simulation Education Services in Oakbrook Terrace, IL.

Well-meaning vendors also have limits to their response abilities during a community disaster, such as roads that collapse, decreased gas supplies, and employees who don’t show up, Cappiello said.

The key is to test your vendor agreements, and if multiple hospitals in a region share emergency vendor arrangements, make sure to test them at the same time.

On a related note, we’d quickly like to recognize two raffle winners from our Environment of Care for 2009 seminar:
Congratulations to Margaret and Thomas, and thank you to everyone else who attended our seminar.
