New York law on nurses' overtime provides exceptions in disasters

New York Gov. David Paterson has signed legislation banning mandatory overtime for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses in hospitals and other healthcare facilities.
However, the law, which takes effect July 1, 2009, provides for exceptions, including
- in a natural or other disasters that increase the need for nursing services
- in a federal, state, or county declaration of an emergency
- where a healthcare employer determines there is an emergency and it is necessary to provide safe patient care
