New EM standards further delineate annual review topics

Emergency Management Alert, August 19, 2008

In advance of our Environment of Care for 2009 seminar in Boston on September 5, we wanted to share with you some of the in-depth advice and analysis that our expert speakers will discuss.

A glance at the 2009 emergency management chapter from The Joint Commission confirms that hospital safety professionals need to carefully review the standards. Though many of the provisions mirror their 2008 versions, some contain subtle differences.

For example, new standard EM.03.01.01 retains the need for an annual evaluation of the hazard vulnerability analysis (HVA) emergency planning efforts, which is currently under EC.4.11. But EM.03.01.01 adds specific wording to review risks, hazards, and potential emergencies within the HVA. This new language helps hospitals and surveyors better understand the intent of the annual review.
