Ambulance catches fire outside hospital ED

Emergency Management Alert, August 12, 2008

About 50 firefighters responded to Nyack Hospital in Nyack, NY, August 10 to put out an electric fire on an ambulance.

As firefighters arrived, the Pearl River Ambulance Corps moved the ambulance away from the hosptial’s emergency department entrance. They also removed oxygen tanks and a fire extinguisher from the vehicle to mitigate the danger, reported The Journal News.

Officials said the smoke was caused by shorted and overheated wiring in an outside compartment on the back of the ambulance. Although firefighters extinguished the small blaze quickly, it required a general alarm response from all eight of Nyack’s fire companies because it occurred outside a hospital.
