County plans for influenza pandemic
Emergency Management Alert, August 12, 2008
To ease the overcrowding of emergency departments in the event of a global outbreak of influenza, the county of San Bernardino, CA, plans to set up alternative-care sites for sick patients.
That is just one of the steps the county will take in preparation for a flu pandemic, reported the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin. That idea and others came out of a July 31 summit held by the county’s Department of Public Health to update plans originally developed in 2007.
In addition to setting up alternative-care locations, the Public Health Department used the summit to build better relationships with cities, towns, and hospitals in the county, the newspaper reported. The summit also focused on identifying trigger points that activate surge plans, such as the possibility of a school closure should cases of pandemic flu be reported among children in the school system. Another goal is to make sure public relations staff in hospitals, cities, and the county are armed with information about the possible nature of such a pandemic.
