New Hampshire towns hit by tornado

Emergency Management Alert, July 29, 2008

One of the first steps in developing emergency plans is performing a risk assessment to find out where vulnerabilities lie, and it’s unlikely that New Hampshire hospitals would have tornadoes on the list when determining what types of disasters are likely to affect them.

They were forced to quickly reconsider on July 24 when a tornado tore through 11 communities and killed a woman in Deerfield, NH, in the collapse of her house. Gov. John Lynch asked President Bush to make a major disaster declaration as a step toward securing federal assistance for tornado victims.

Lynch met yesterday morning with federal, state, and local officials to assess the emergency response to the tornado, The Boston Globe reported. The tornado destroyed 19 homes and damaged dozens more in a state where emergency management officials are more used to dealing with blizzards, hurricanes, and flooding.
