Emergency planning a hot topic at ASHE's conference
Emergency Management Alert, July 29, 2008
The American Society for Healthcare Engineering’s (ASHE) annual conference took place last week, and among the highlights were several Joint Commission-themed sessions.
George Mills, senior engineer at The Joint Commission, urged hospitals to plan for the unexpected. He asked ASHE attendees to consider the following scenarios as they hone their emergency operations plans:
- What will your hospital do if a generator fails during a power outage? Do you have a back-up agreement in place with a generator vendor?
- What if your facility loses water during the summer? How will you deal with air conditioning and sanitation needs?
- Are the hospital’s housekeeping supplies stored in the basement and, if so, will they survive a flood?
