Bird flu exhibits enhanced potential to infect humans

New study results released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggest that some North American avian influenza A H7 virus strains might have enhanced potential to infect humans and to spread from human to human.

To date, most cases of avian influenza have been the result of contact between humans and infected poultry or contaminated surfaces, the CDC said in a press release June 10. The CDC’s lead author on the project said the results emphasize the need for continued surveillance.
