Pandemic drill teaches practical lessons

A recent pandemic drill in Columbus, NE, confirmed that if you have a preplanned message to communicate to concerned citizens along with a database of community resources, you’ll be equipped with two important tools to inform and ensure residents in the event of a pandemic, according to The Columbus Telegram on June 20.

This exercise targeted special population care in emergency response, stressing effective communication with patients with disabilities, their families, and special services. The health department conducted the drill after a recent flood highlighted weaknesses in the department’s emergency preparedness. During the flood, residents swarmed into an emergency tetanus vaccine clinic in far greater numbers than authorities anticipated. Among those residents were patients with special needs.
