Federal government takes action to meet emergency health needs

Emergency Management Alert, June 24, 2008

To help hospitals and nursing homes receiving patients and residents evacuated from flooded facilities, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Mike Leavitt declared a public health emergency on June 16 in the flood-stricken states of Iowa and Indiana.

The action gives Medicare beneficiaries and their healthcare provider greater flexibility in meeting emergency health needs, HHS said in an announcement. Many Medicare beneficiates have been evacuated to neighboring communities, where receiving hospitals and nursing homes may have no healthcare records, information on current health status, or verification of the person’s status as a Medicare beneficiary, HHS said. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is assuring those facilities that it will waive the normal burden of documentation and they can presume patients are eligible for Medicare benefits.
