Hospital goes into lock down after gun threat

Emergency Management Alert, June 10, 2008

Hospitals officials locked down the SLV Medical Center and its associated medical facilities in Alamosa, CO, on June 4 after staff received a call that a man with a gun was on his way to the facilities.

After about two hours in lock down mode, with staff guarding the doors and police searching the medical facilities, no gunman was found, reported the Valley Courier. “It was a good drill basically,” the medical center spokesman told the newspaper.

Hospital officials called a “code silver,” designating a gun threat, and alerted police. While officers searched the buildings, hospital staff guarded the entranceways to the medical facilities. After the incident, hospital officials held a debriefing with the police department to discuss how well the emergency was handled and what could be done differently in the future. For example, the emergency room entrance was a problem area since the hospital could not refuse entrance to someone in an emergency.
