Indiana runs state wide tornado siren tests

Emergency Management Alert, June 3, 2008

A new law put into effect this year calls for Indiana’s 92 counties to test and report all tornado sirens to Indiana’s Department of Homeland Security. The counties must report all existing and planned sirens, all areas not within range of a siren, and recommendations for what additional sirens are needed, according to the Associated Press.

Although tornado sirens are technologically out of date, with the emergence of television, radio, and Internet warnings, they are still an invaluable life-saving device. Tornado sirens are aimed at warning those who are away from their household and without access to technology, such as farmers.

Who do you contact when you live in a farm area and do have or can not hear the local sirens? Thanks,
