Gulf Coast officials prepare for start of hurricane season
Emergency Management Alert, May 27, 2008
With the hurricane season set to begin June 1, Gulf Coast officials attended a three-day conference earlier this month and spent several hours going through a simulated Category 3 hurricane scenario.
Since no hurricane has hit the Gulf Coast since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Alabama and Mississippi officials are worried that residents and tourists could become complacent about the seriousness of orders to flee in the event of an advancing storm, the Associated Press reported. Officials also worry that high gasoline prices could delay people from evacuating. Hurricane season runs through November.
