Natural disasters test emergency response

Emergency Management Alert, May 20, 2008

Two natural disasters in tightly-ruled Asian nations this month produced two very different responses: Myanmar's very slow reaction to Cyclone Nargis, and China's speedy response to a killer earthquake, reported the Associated Press (AP).

Myanmar's response sparked international outrage. China's won admiration, the AP said. Myanmar’s military government barred almost all foreign experts experienced in managing humanitarian crises. While China’s communist government also did not allow foreign aid workers into the province hit by the earthquake, the country accepted international aid and quickly sent soldiers and police into the disaster area.

The Myanmar health system has been stretched to the limit after the cyclone left people exposed to pounding rains and potential disease, the AP reported. The government finally gave Thai and Indian doctors permission to help.
