TB remains a risk for healthcare workers

Emergency Management Alert, April 22, 2008

Globally, tuberculosis (TB) cases per capita have fallen since 2003 reported NIOSH eNews in April, but healthcare workers, who constituted 3% of all reported TB cases in the United States, still remain on the list of high-risk groups for infection. In 2006, the most recent year for which data is available, 408 healthcare workers were diagnosed with TB, according to the CDC.

But there are some disturbing trends in the horizon. Perhaps most alarming, cases of multidrug-resistant TB continue to increase, according to NIOSH.

For more information on TB in healthcare facilities, go to the NIOSH Web page on the topic.
