Nurses association issues disaster guidelines for healthcare professionals

Emergency Management Alert, April 22, 2008

Emergency response planners need to consider patient care guidelines and regulations, the American Nurses Association (ANA) recommended in a recently released report “Adapting Standards of Care Under Extreme Conditions: Guidance for Professionals During Disaster, Pandemics, and Other Extreme Emergencies.”

The ANA report includes guidelines and recommendations for healthcare professionals who respond to emergencies. The group warns that registered nurses and other healthcare workers must prepare themselves and their families for the potential to be away for extended periods during an emergency.
