The need to protect healthcare workers in influenza pandemic

Providing personal protective equipment (PPE) to healthcare workers will be a critical component in responding to an influenza pandemic, according to the newest entry of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Science Blog. But there is still much to be learned about how the infection is transmitted, what constitutes appropriate and effective PPE, and the limitations of PPE in controlling the spread of a potential influenza pandemic.
The blog entry by Edward F. Fries, who works in the Office of the Director of the NIOSH National Personal Protective Technology Laboratory, identifies healthcare worker protection issues and references a draft action plan from the agency's collaboration with the Institute of Medicine (IOM).
