FCC adopts rules for emergency mobile-device text alerts

Emergency Management Alert, April 15, 2008

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on April 9 adopted rules to allow the delivery of commercial mobile alerts to the public during emergencies.

The FCC will allow wireless carriers to transmit alerts, warnings, and critical information to consumers’ cell phones and other mobile devices during disasters or other emergencies, according to a FCC news release.

Once it is fully operational, the Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS) will be able to deliver alerts to participating wireless services. Carriers can then transmit text-based alerts to subscribers, the FCC said. Click here for a copy of the press release.
