Robots detect danger in emergency situations

Emergency Management Alert, April 1, 2008

Emergency response crews in West Virginia are learning how to use new technology such as robots in emergency situations.

National Geographic teamed up with West Virginia Regional Response crews in late March to film footage of training sessions as part of a documentary about how robots can help in emergencies, reported WBOY-TV in Clarksburg.

The National Geographic film crew supplied the robots, which can perform tasks such as climbing stairs, detecting when a wall will collapse, and using infrared cameras, according to the TV station. It was the first chance the response teams had to use the robots.
