Police shot a man, who claimed he had a bomb and was going to detonate it, inside the lobby of Boulder (CO) Community Hospital on March 17. The suspect later died of his injuries.

After about four hours of unsuccessful negotiations, the man attempted to move further into the hospital, at which point a sniper shot him.

The hospital didn't evacuate anyone during the standoff, though it did move eight patients from the ER to safer areas of the building, a hospital spokesperson told the Daily Camera of Boulder.

Based on the size of the package the suspect was carrying, police estimated a perimeter beyond which they felt occupants in the building were safe, the newspaper reported.

Police later determined that the package was not a bomb, the Daily Camera said.

Officers were originally called to the scene after someone informed hospital staff members that a man was sitting in a wheelchair in the lobby, saying he had a detonator connected to an oxygen tank, according to police.
