Flood waters carry risk of infection, diarrhea among victims and responders

Emergency Management Alert, March 18, 2008

Every emergency responder knows that flood waters can be gross. They hasten the spread of infection and create other unpleasant situations-among them, the lack of access to clean water, sanitary facilities, and electricity.

As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reminds us, "Flood waters may contain fecal material from overflowing sewage systems, and agricultural and industrial byproducts." It's especially important for emergency responders to not only follow proper hand hygiene but know how to treat patients with diarrhea, says the CDC.

Follow these links to find fact sheets on guidelines for management of acute diarrhea and maintenance of proper hand hygiene after the onset of disaster.
