On Tuesday, The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) opened a field review for its proposed emergency management standards.
The "EM" standards generally reflect requirements already in effect in the EC chapter of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual for Hospitals (CAMH). Two changes that safety officers and facility directors will quickly note include the following:
- EM.02.02.13, which allows hospitals during emergencies to grant disaster privileges to volunteer licensed independent practitioners
- EM.02.02.15, which allows hospitals to assign disaster responsibilities to certified medical volunteers who aren't licensed independent practitioners
Currently, the above bullets fall under the medical staffing and human resource standards in the CAMH.
The field review closes April 22. Watch for more details in coming issues of Hospital Safety Connection and Briefings on Hospital Safety.
