The new attorney general in Louisiana has said that under his watch, clinicians will not need to fear possible jail time for their medical decisions during disasters.

Attorney General James Caldwell's stance in this regard is opposite of his predecessor's, Charles Foti, Caldwell told New Orleans CityBusiness.

Foti charged a New Orleans physician with administering lethal injections to patients at Methodist Medical Center in the chaotic days following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. A grand jury refused to indict the physician, though she still faces civil lawsuits.

Subscribers to the Hospital Safety Center can read more about the potential legal risks involved with emergency responses in their March issue of Briefings on Hospital Safety, which is posted online now.
