Bush cuts preparedness dollars but preserves funds for ventilators

When the Bush administration unveiled a $3.1 trillion budget for the 2009 fiscal year on February 4th, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt announced the usual cuts to public health initiatives; however, at the same press conference, he announced the government's plan to expand the number of the nation's ventilators, a supply he termed "inadequate." The budget allots $25 million for the effort; ventilators under consideration are $8,000 to $10,000 apiece.
