February is American Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart disease which is the leading cause of death in the United States and a major cause of disability, according to the CDC.

OSHA estimates that 10,000 sudden cardiac arrests occur at work every year. A number of these victims, up to 60%, might be saved if automated external defibrillators (AEDs) were immediately available, according to the agency.

Recent advances in technology have made AEDs widely available, safe, effective, portable, and easy to use, says OSHA's Best Practices Guide: Fundamentals of a Workplace First-Aid Program. "All worksites are potential candidates for AED programs," according to the Guide, and employers should assess the role of AEDs in first-aid response in the workplace.
