The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued a hefty fine to a hospital for alleged medical waste problems that all healthcare sites should be wary of.
The state fined Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, PA, $100,000 for allegedly illegally disposing of infectious and chemotherapeutic waste in 2006.
The state determined that the hospital failed to:
- Separate medical waste from regular solid waste
- Properly label infectious waste
- Ensure that workers packaging infectious waste wore protective gloves and overalls
The hospital has instituted new measures to avoid similar problems in the future, according to the state.
