Tip of the week: Focus on hazcom problems throughout the building

During the period from October 2006 through September 2007, hazard communication was the third most-cited OSHA standard during federal hospital inspections.

Medical centers probably have a hard time with hazcom violations because employees don't focus enough on the standard, says Dionne Williams, senior industrial hygienist in OSHA's Office of Health Enforcement.

One example she provides: Drug-handling precautions for nurses seems to be lacking in a lot of facilities.

"A hospital is like a small community," Williams says. "There's chemical use in almost all departments . . . so hazcom is something we see quite often in terms of the deficiencies."
