The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a respiratory test that detects and identifies 12 specific respiratory viruses at the same time from one sample.
The xTAG Respiratory Viral Panel "is the first test for the detection and differentiation of influenza A subtypes H1 and H3," according to the FDA's January 3 announcement. "Influenza A is the most severe form of flu for humans and has been the cause of major epidemics," the agency adds. Other viruses identified by the new test are: influenza B; respiratory syncytial virus subtype A and B; parainfluenza 1, 2, and 3; rhinovirus; adenovirus. Toronto-based Luminex Molecular Diagnostics manufactures the xTAG Respiratory Viral Panel.
