Two Boston hospitals took extra housekeeping and educational steps within the past month after employees and patients contracted norovirus, which causes gastrointestinal problems:
- At Massachusetts General Hospital, 31 workers and 13 patients became infected. The facility cleaned floors and serving tables with a bleach solution, and also cleaned patient charts and computer keyboards, The Boston Globe reported on Tuesday. Staff members who had been ill couldn't return to work until three days after their symptoms ended.
- Meanwhile, 22 workers and eight patients at Brigham and Women's Hospital also got sick. Officials used the opportunity to reinforce hand hygiene practices, The Globe reported.
For further information about controlling norovirus, check out this fact sheet from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
