As of New Year's Day, several important Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) changes took effect:
- Hospitals must now comply with new emergency management standards under EC.4.11 through EC.4.18
- Life safety specialists will now visit all hospitals regardless of size for one day, and hospitals with more than 750,000 square feet of healthcare occupancy space will host life safety specialists for two days
- Hospitals may use six-year testing frequencies for fire and smoke dampers, an extension from the prior four-year requirement
Platinum subscribers and free trial users to the Hospital Safety Center can view a crosswalk of the 2007 to 2008 emergency management standards. Meanwhile, all subscribers to the Hospital Safety Center can download a special report about The Joint Commission's life safety surveys.
