The U.S. Public Health service has changed recommendations for two drugs used to manage HIV exposures from needlesticks in the workplace.
Updated Information Regarding Antiretroviral Agents Used as HIV Postexposure Prophylaxis for Occupational HIV Exposures, December 14, 2007, recommends a new dosing regimen for Kaletra (Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL). The other recommendation warns against prescribing Viracept (Pfizer, Inc., New York) for pregnant women. Guidance on the management of specific exposures are available from the National Clinicians' Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Hotline by telephone (888/448-4911) or online at www.ucsf.edu/hivcntr.
