Prepared for The Joint Commission's 2008 standards? Great. What about 2009?

"If The Joint Commission (formerly JCAHO) ratifies its proposed EC standard revisions as written, emergency management plans and procedures might get even more scrutiny come 2009," says Greeley Company consultant and safety expert Steven MacArthur this week in a posting on HCPro's Hospital Safety Center. HCPro spoke to Dean Samet, CHSP, director of regulatory compliance services at Smith Seckman Reid, Inc., based in Nashville, who said that The Joint Commission's creation of a discrete emergency management chapter is a sure sign that the accreditor is moving toward increased surveillance in that area. One hot area of discussion is whether the proposal to merge the safety and security sections is well advised.
