Life safety door locking requirements hinge on the ability to unlock

If you lock doors within a required means of egress using criteria in the 2000 edition of the Life Safety Code, an important provision involves either:
- Staff members carrying keys to unlock these doors during emergencies
- The hospital having the ability to electronically release the locks
This provision isn't just a concern for fires; other emergencies, such as an internal hazardous materials release, could require rapid unlocking of doors, too.
