If you lock doors within a required means of egress using criteria in the 2000 edition of the Life Safety Code, an important provision involves either:

  • Staff members carrying keys to unlock these doors during emergencies
  • The hospital having the ability to electronically release the locks

This provision isn't just a concern for fires; other emergencies, such as an internal hazardous materials release, could require rapid unlocking of doors, too.

If you'd like to learn more about the code's door locking rules, join us on December 11 for our live audioconference, during which a fire protection engineer from the Department of Veterans Affairs and a former Joint Commission life safety surveyor will detail the various requirements.
