Family physician practices are not prepared for the infection control measures needed to respond to a respiratory epidemic, according to a November 19 AM News report.

The warning came at the American Academy of Family Physicians' (AAFP) annual scientific assembly in October in Chicago.

"Our offices will see 100 to 200 times the volume of the local emergency department," Charles W. Mackett III, MD, executive vice chair of the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, told the assembly, according to the report.

Outbreak preparation, which is a focus for the AAFP this year, involves protecting not only patients but also healthcare workers.
