Pan-flu checklist for long-term care
Emergency Management Alert, November 12, 2007
Does it ever seem as though coverage of pan-flu focuses too heavily on stategies for acute-care hospitals? Never fear: With its Long-Term Care and Other Residential Facilities Pandemic Influenza Planning Checklist, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) will help you round out a flu-fighting plan no matter where you work. (Don't be put off by the word "pandemic"; many of the forms and tools are easily applied to fighting seasonal flu, says HHS.)
Sample questions:
1. Is there a procedure in place for assessment of seasonal flu in incoming residents?
2. Is there an admission policy or protocol to determine the appropriate placement and isolation of patients with an influenza-like illness?
3. Is there a system in place to apply any information gained from monitoring of influenza among facility patients and staff to implement prevention interventions (e.g., isolation, cohorting)?
