Exercise improves balance for older adults

Rehab Regs, November 2, 2007

Older adults who walk, participate in strength and balance training, dance, and practice tai chi reduce their risk of falls, according to a new review published in The Cochrane Library. Those who actively take part in balance exercises are steadier on their feet as they grow older. In the study, 2,800 participants "achieved improvements in different kinds of balance measures including walking speed, standing on one leg and reaching forward without tipping over," according to the review.
