OIG 2008 plan to put spotlight on therapy services

Rehab Regs, October 5, 2007

Physical and occupational therapy services will face more scrutiny in 2008 than any previous year after the Office of Inspector General (OIG) for the Department of Health and Human Services released the 2008 Work Plan. The plan reveals that the OIG will take a closer look at claims for Medicaid occupational and physical therapy services. According to the OIG, previous studies of PT and OT services found that some therapists provided services to Medicaid patients that were medically unnecessary, billed incorrectly, or performed by unqualified providers.

The OIG will further research Medicare claims submitted by comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation facilities for OT, PT, and speech-language services. Past reviews determined that "Medicare paid significant amounts for unallowable, or highly questionable therapy services in outpatient rehabilitation facilities and nursing homes," according to the report.
