Audit finds therapist billing Medicare inappropriately

Rehab Regs, September 21, 2007

A recent Office of Inspector General (OIG) audit revealed that a Florida physical therapist owes Medicare $411,781 for improperly billed services provided in 2003, according to an OIG report. The report found that, among other things, the therapist inappropriately used his provider identification number to bill for service that he had another therapist provide or supervise and miscoded services. The audit found that he did not meet Medicare's reimbursement requirements in 96 out of 100 sampled claims. The therapist stated that he will address the audit through the Medicare appeals process, according to the report.
