CMS issues Stark III
Rehab Regs, September 7, 2007
CMS released the third phase of the Stark law, prohibiting physicians from referring Medicare patients to businesses or family members that they have financial interest in, according to an agency press release. "These rules protect beneficiaries from receiving services they may not need and the Medicare program from paying potentially unnecessary costs," said Herb Kuhn, CMS acting deputy administrator. The rule only refines what was written in the second phase; it does not make any changes. The final rule was published in the September 5, 2007 Federal Register.
