Electric stimulus helps patients go from liquid to solid foods

Rehab Regs, September 7, 2007

Electrotherapy is helping stroke patients relearn how to swallow, reported myrtlebeachonline.com. Between electrotherapy, swallowing exercises, and special diets, speech-language pathologists are helping patients regain their confidence and their ability to eat. For many patients, this new technology allows them to live a normal life and get them back to solid foods. During the 45-minute electrotherapy session, four nickel-sized electrodes taped to the patient's neck cause the muscles to contract into swallows, strengthening the reflex through repetition, according to the Web site.
