PTs and OTs to comment on physician referrals
Rehab Regs, August 10, 2007
The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) is urging OTs and PTs to provide comments to CMS about potential changes to the number of exceptions to the Stark regulations, according to an AOTA press release. Under Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule, CMS is looking for comments on the referral relationship between physicians, OTs, and PTs.
The Stark regulations are in place to help stop Medicare fraud and abuse by prohibiting physician self-referral. This means that physicians can't make referrals to anyone they might have financial connections with. OTs and PTs are at times implicated in this and may lose out on referrals because of their relationship with the physician, according to the release.
