PTs and OTs oppose RESNA certification

Rehab Regs, August 3, 2007

The April 1, 2008 effective date for PT and OT RESNA certification is being met with opposition by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), according to an AOTA press release. The two associations met last week with CMS to discuss the Medicare durable medical equipment contractor's local coverage determination policy for power mobility devices.

The new provisions will require PTs and OTs to be RESNA-certified Assistive Technology Practitioners in order to evaluate patients receiving Group 2, Group 3, or Group 4 wheelchairs. The associations are arguing that this policy will cause Medicare beneficiaries to have difficulties accessing wheelchairs, according to the AOTA.
