Language skills are the tool for spelling success

Rehab Regs, May 18, 2007

When attempting to improve reading, writing, and spelling abilities, those who use word study rather than memorization fare better, according to a study published by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Word study works by encoding and decoding words. The study found that students who are learning to spell using the word study concept having improved spelling and reading skills. Word study involves several aspects, and students should ask the following questions when trying to learn a new word:

  • How many sounds do I hear in a word?
  • What do I know about the way the long a vowel sound can be spelled?

By asking these types of questions, students can take a word like magic and realize they can use the same spelling to spell magician, according to the ASHA press release.
