CMS details additional guidance for NPI contingency plan

Rehab Regs, May 18, 2007

On May 8, CMS released provider authentication requirements for telephone and written inquiries during the National Provider Identifier (NPI) contingency plan. The contingency plan allows providers more time-past the May 23, 2007, deadline-to obtain an NPI. During this time, therapists and other providers can still use their legacy numbers or provider transaction access numbers (PTAN). Until Medicare fee-for-service contractors provide the end date for the NPI contingency plan, CMS says you will need to provide the following information:

  • For inquiries to the Interactive Voice Response system you need to provide your PTAN, also known as your legacy number
  • For inquiries to a customer service representative or written inquiries, you need to provide your PTAN/legacy number and, depending on the contractor, your provider name
